The Rocketeers Drum and Bugle Corps are pleased to introduce Momentum Percussion Independent. Momentum Percussion Independent, a new independent indoor percussion ensemble competing in Southeastern Color Guard Circuit (SCGC) and Winter Guard International (WGI) events. Based in Huntsville, Alabama, Momentum Percussion Independent (MPI) will offer local youth age 14-22 an outlet for performing in a contemporary marching percussion ensemble at a very high level of musical and visual proficiency.
The Rocketeers – MPI will be under the leadership of Bryan Barley – Percussion Director/Program Coordinator and Zack Melton – Educational Director/Music Arranger.
Bryan Barley: Bryan comes to Momentum Percussion Independent with a rich set of life experiences. He has been actively involved in directing, designing, consulting, arranging for, and instructing competitive percussion ensembles for over 20 years working with numerous programs such as Johnson, Lee, Grissom and Bob Jones High Schools in North Alabama. He serves as the percussion development staff lead and has served as the arranger for the Bob Jones High School percussion program. Since his affiliation with BJHS, the drumline was a 2008 SCGC Scholastic Open Class Gold Medalist and a three time WGI Scholastic Open Class Finalist since 2008. He currently operates a private percussion education studio in Madison, Alabama, called Madison County Drums and Percussion. He has numerous private students of which several have marched center snare in the Southwind, Spirit of Atlanta, Music City, Santa Clara Vanguard, and The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps’, the Music City Mystique Indoor Percussion organization, and graduated from Berklee School of Music
Bryan marched Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps 1981 & 82 and studied with Mike Beck of Spirit of Atlanta. Although he studied percussion performance in college, he received his degree in electrical engineering. He works full time for the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center as a project manager and chief engineer within the Space Launch System program office. His professional career has included developing hardware for the International Space Station, training NASA astronauts on science payloads, and serving as a strategy and business development manager for MSFC.
Bryan was born and raised in North Alabama, and although he has worked in positions that have taken him across the country and Europe, he loves his home base and is very interested in developing strong youth organizations in this area. He and his beautiful wife have four children. Bryan enjoys coaching kids sports such as soccer, baseball, and softball. He also currently serves on the board of directors for the Huntsville Community Drumline youth organization.
Zach Melton: Zack is a graduate from the University of North Alabama in Florence and completed his Instrumental Music degree in May 2013. Throughout his time at college, Zack marched with Spirit Drum and Bugle Corps on snare drum for two summers, also on snare drum from November 2010 through April 2011 with the WGI World Finalist and 7 time Gold Medalist Music City Mystique. Under the direction of Dr. Iain Moyer, Zack studied percussion solo repertoire including drum set etudes, marimba and vibe solos, timpani solos, small chamber works, and large percussion ensemble pieces. He has composed and arranged multiple marching percussion arrangements for schools such as Deshler, Athens, Bob Jones, Decatur, Grissom, and the University of North Alabama. Zack now lives in Madison, and works with the Decatur Marching Band, the Bob Jones Band and Percussion Ensembles, the Grissom High School Band Program, and teaches private lessons to middle and high school percussionists.
